I will also be going to the Kolkata Consulate to get my H1B stamped in May 2008 (HIB expires Aug 2008). Since getting an appointment at the US Consulate requires a prior payment of visa fees at a Consulate designated bank, I would apprecitae if you would let me know how this process works: I.e: (1) How to pay the visa application fee and the visa issuance fee at that bank; and (2) how to book an appointment at the Consulate at Kolkata. I believe that @GCFrenzy your suggestions are good. For any business visa it is definitely a basic requirement to have a letter stating all the information that you are mentioning. I had also worked for a large Indian company and my first visit to US was on B1 this was immediately after 9/11 and the client gave a very similar letter in those days however you did not go to the consulate for stamping. Also if the company can state the duration of the trip and substantiate with a return ticket the chances of approval will be much higher the duration should be less than 5-6 weeks. Issuing visa is always in good faith and at the discretion of the VO. @Nathan I think it would not be correct to generalize even though what you are saying is correct because many genuine people are affected due to the collateral a damage. Think of this many people when they applied for F1 also stated in good faith that they will return to their home countries after their studies but most of them are still here and many of them on immigration forums :).

Here is my prediction.
With July Fiasco INS has learnt their lessons.
They have potential to process and approve 40K cases in one month.
Once all receipting is done by Sept 17th for all late Aug 17th filers, they will immediately start processing all oct 08 current cases.
I think they might even issue again 40K cases in october ?
Why not ?
So it is important to quickly do the FP and after FP within 3 weeks the name check gets cleared.
So anyone who does FP in Sept and who is current in oct , be ready to get your GC soon.
I would say dont be surprised if it takes just one month to approve ?????
Finger-printing and namecheck are not connected. Namecheck is triggered as soon as receipt is generated. Fingerprinting is separete. The two are not going to affect each other. The only thing is fingerprinting results are out in about a minute or two, namecheck can take anywhere from 2 minutes to 20 years.

Job Title has to be same. Detail description does not matter. So if you are say "Computer System Analyst", new job should have same title. Duties do not matter. Higher salary is OK. No problems there. I-140 if revoked by previous company does not harm.

I received a receipt confirmation for my I-140 petition. It shows that they received on March 24, 2006. I tried to check on the status on USCIS website in case status. I could not find my case so far. Does it take so long to be updated. I am worried if my petition is misplaced somewhere...

have you punched in all the letters and numbers correctly? Pay attention to that, because if you mistake one number you will not get accurate result..
If the number you are typing is correct than something must be wrong on their side and you can call 800 number to inquire via attomated system about your case...

Actually, IMO, stocks is a loosers game. Many have tried it and have lost a "lot" of money(including myself). If you would like to make money through investments(i didn't say *stocks*), you should go with something like mutual funds and have a well diversified portfolio across different asset classes.
If you really want to get yourself into stock market investing, the best book(Holy Grail for people like Warren Buffet and many other Mutual Fund managers) to get started on is is The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham. There are tons of discussion forums like morningstar.com that has discussions about finance related topics. You could also get started with Mutual Funds for Dummies, Common Sense book on Investing by John Bogle, The Intelligent Asset Allocator by Bill Bernstein etc., There are tons of other ones, but this would get you started.
But, my 2 cents, have a long term goal, educate yourself on what investing(again, I didn't say stocks) is and get started. Investing is a marathon not a sprint.

I strongly feel investing in well known companies' stocks which are battered temporarily is a nice way of expecting better returns when the stock market revives.

Hi All,
I received the I-485 reciept notice yesterday from my lawyer (see below for my info), but the alien number on I-485 is different from the number on my approved I-140. My I-140 has a number starting with A099, but my I-485 reciept notice has a number starting with A088. Someone in this forum mentioned that A099 is for the primary applicant and A088 is for the dependant. I am the primary applicant for I-485, so if it is true, I should get A099, not A088. I am not sure if I can have two different alien numbers or if this is a mistake by USCIS. Is anyone in the same situation?
I am sorry if this issue is discussed previously (I couldn't find the related thread). I would greatly appreciate your input.
